Own a tschukudu, and you need no engine and gas for transporting goods. The wooden rollers, weighing 150 kilos, make robust load-carriers and are steered by plucky drivers across the bumpy slopes of the Eastern Congo. Here, in the province of Kivu, which has been ravaged by war for decades, the archaic contraptions defy modern trucks because the roads are poor, the safety situation is unstable, and the workforce is cheap.
